WESTFIELD, NJ – About 1,500 participants burned off the Thanksgiving meal at Westfield’s 34th Annual Turkey Trot in Tamaques Park Saturday.

Families, friends and pets warmed up on the field under sunny skies as they enjoyed bagels, soup and coffee before the trot began at 10:30 a.m.

The run was presented by Sports Action Reaction and PracticeHard and sponsored by DiPaolo Physical Therapy and TAPinto Westfield.

“It’s tradition,” Tears Smith, head coordinator of Sports Action Reaction, said of the run. “We have the same people come back year after year. People from out of town and out of state do it as a family for the holiday, as well as elite runners.”

The run was kicked off by a PracticeHard one-mile race. Runners ages 15 and younger were awarded medals for first, second and third place in different age brackets.

In the five-mile Turkey Trot, racers ranging from age 10 to 85 ran a course around the park, led by cars driven by Westfield police and Smith. The runners were decked out in turkey hats, tutus and Turkey Trot tee-shirts.

“People are really festive because of the holiday,” Smith said. “It’s less competitive and more fun.”

Joshua Izewski of Doylestown, PA, was the first-place runner, clocking in at 25:16.4. Westfield’s own Kaitlyn Johnson placed first for women and 15th overall with a time of 30:44.2.

This week's Parshah (Torah reading) is the Parshah of Pinchas the Zealot: the courageous young priest who stood up against idolatry and immorality and, in the end, saved Israel from a devastating plague.
