WESTFIELD, NJ — Following a contest for the best design, town officials have unveiled a logo honoring the municipality’s 300th anniversary.

Mayor Shelley Brindle on Tuesday announced the contest winner and said shops, youth athletics teams along with the Downtown Westfield Corporation would be among the groups to sport versions the new design.

“After reviewing more than 25 wonderful and creative submissions from many talented residents, the entry by local designer Jenn Wilner was chosen to represent this significant milestone,” Brindle said.

Standing before the Town Council, Wilner explained that the logo hinges around the “3” which when turned on its side doubles as the “W” in Westfield.

“It’s kind of a happy accident that it ended up working out this way,” Wilner said.

The logo also includes a weather vane the sort of which can be seen on both the old Children’s Place building in the downtown and on top of the building that Warby Parker now occupies.

Pointing to blank portion of the logo, Wilner explained, that there is room for variety within the design. “This area could be shopping, or dining, or the Blue Devil or something like that,” she said.

The guidelines for the contest had stated the logo “be a reflection of Westfield’s 300’s vision — bold, commemorative, current and celebratory.”

Formalization of the logo, however, is just part of the puzzle as the town’s tri-centennial nears.

“Our Steering Committee has met several times to map out some key events and committees for the year-long commemoration of our 300th anniversary in 2020, and we will be asking for volunteers in the coming weeks,” Brindle said. “Early plans include concerts, lectures, walking tours, a book fair, public art displays, and did I mention fireworks?”
