WESTFIELD, NJ — What Westfield couple has been married the longest? Who served in WWII? What’s the oldest running car in town?

Lifelong Westfield, a volunteer initiative of the Mayor’s Senior Advisory Council, surveyed the public recently to identify residents, pets, cars and businesses that qualified to earn town’s Westfield 300 Milestone Awards, part of its year-long 300th anniversary celebration.

Among the winners are Verna and Silveo Colletti, who celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in April. The couple, who moved to Westfield in 1959, met in 1943 when Silveo, an Army Air Force cadet, landed his plane on an auxiliary airfield that Verna’s family leased to the Army Air Force. They have five children and six great-grandchildren. He just celebrated his 101st birthday.

Another honoree is WWII veteran John “Chick” Miller, who graduated from Westfield High School in 1944 and played baseball in a semi-pro summer league for a team called the Westfield Hawks. Before the season was over, he was drafted and sent to Italy, arriving shortly before the surrender of Germany.

After the war, Miller worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. But he didn’t stop there — in retirement he served Westfield as a crossing guard for 22 years.
