WESTFIELD, NJ — The Martin Wallberg American Legion Post 3 will host its first annual "March a Mile" to benefit New Jersey’s homeless veterans this Saturday, Dec. 3. The event will take place at Tamaques Park.
The idea for the march came from the NJ American Legion Convention in Wildwood, according to Sharon Knight, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 3 president.
“The national commander at the time had a similar walk on the boardwalk,” Knight said. “After the walk we were talking and decided we could do something like that right here in Westfield.”
Registration and check-in for the event will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the walk will begin promptly at noon. The department chair of post 3 will call cadence and lead the walk around the park.
“The American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary all have a ‘routine’ for opening meetings,” Knight said. “We’ll start off with the Pledge of Allegiance, a short non-secular prayer and maybe a few words from one of our attendees.”
Pre-registration is recommended, and can be done in-person at the post at 1003 North Ave. West or via mail-in form available on the post's Facebook page. All money raised will be donated to Veteran’s Haven North Transitional Housing Programs for Homeless Veterans.
“This is our first time doing something like this at Post 3 and everyone has been wonderful with their help and support,” Knight said.
