The Westfield Area Y is proud to announce its newly formed youth sports development program.  Now, children will have the opportunity to progress at their own pace within a sport through different class levels.
Whether the sport is t-ball, soccer, basketball or pillo-polo (floor hockey using soft equipment), or even sports sampler in which kids experience a different sport each week, children ages 3-5 begin in the Rookie level, learning basic eye-hand-foot skills.  Once the instructor feels the Rookie level has been mastered, the child can progress to the Juniorlevel in which they build on skills already developed.
Beginning at age 6, children with little or no experience enter at the Developmental level, where skills are developed and game situations are introduced.  Once this level has been mastered, instructors will recommend athletes to the All Star level, in which strategy is implemented through game situations.
In all Y youth sports classes, coaches strive to instill positive self-image in each player while focusing on teamwork, skill development and fun.

The Sports Department is led by Amanda Aguirre and Paul Garwood, who each have degrees in Physical Education and Health. Their goal through this new sport development program is to ensure that students not only learn sports, but also have fun.
