The Westfield Area YMCA held the school year kickoff event for the 7th Grade Initiative on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Main Y Facility located at 220 Clark St. in Westfield. Seventh graders and their families learned about the program and enjoyed the interactive sport wall, climbing wall, fitness testing and asked questions of personal trainers.

In partnership with UnitedHealthcare, the 7th Grade Initiative provides a complimentary membership and specialized programming to all 7th graders who live or attend school in Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside and Westfield to encourage the development of healthy lifestyle habits. Research indicates that 7th grade is a key year in a child’s development of attitudes and behaviors regarding body image, nutrition and self-esteem. More than 400 students participated this past school year.

Registration is open for this free program. Contact Amanda Aguirre at 908-301-YMCA (9622) ext. 258 or
