A new basketball clinic for children with special needs is registering now at the Westfield Area YMCA. There will be a clinic for grades 1-2 and a clinic for grades 3-4. This clinic is non-competitive and is designed to provide players the opportunity to learn basketball skills and team concepts in an environment that encourages them to enjoy the sport and reach their full potential. Drills develop motor skills and self confidence while focusing on listening, patience, and team building within a group setting.
“We have many programs for people with special needs at the Westfield Area YMCA, but this is our first Basketball offering specifically for children with special needs,” said Amanda Aguirre, Westfield Area YMCA Director of Physical Programs. “The idea came from one of our volunteers who has a passion for basketball and was willing to put in time to bring this Clinic to life.”
Julia Horne is a Westfield High School student and Westfield Area YMCA volunteer:
“I grew up playing basketball, and it has always been my favorite sport,” said Julia, “I wanted to share my love for basketball with children who might not otherwise have an opportunity to play team sports, and I am very grateful to the Westfield Area Y for making this opportunity available.”
The Clinics are on Sundays April 15 to June 3, with no clinic on 5/13 & 5/27. Children in grades 1-2 meet 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and children in grades 3-4 meets 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Parent attendance is required, and parent participation is recommended. After registering, parent will be contacted to set up individual pre-clinic meeting. Space is limited. Registration ends when maximum enrollment is reached.
