WESTFIELD, NJ — Young adults from the Westfield Area YMCA’s Dragonfly program along with members of the Devilfish and Flyers walked the catwalk Saturday night at Lord & Taylor on North Avenue. The event attracted a crowd of friends and family who came to cheer on the models.
“The Westfield Y has always had a great relationship with Lord & Taylor,” Greg Hatzisavvas, senior director of member wellness & engagement, said. He noted that Jennifer Lane of the flagship store orchestrated the event with a team of sales associates, volunteers and staff from the Y.
Lord & Taylor will donate 5 percent of purchases made Saturday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the proceeds going the Y in support of the 5K Run for Everyone, which supports the Y's Dragonfly program for young adults with special needs.
Recreation Therapist Jill Koerber works with the Dragonfly participants, ages 18-26. Koerber focuses with them on basic social skills, activities like cooking and physical activities including boxing and dancing. Beaming with pride about how lovely, as well as brave the models were, Koerber noted that the looks on their faces were “priceless” after having their hair styled and makeup applied by the cosmetics department.
“For a great number of the approximately 20 Dragonfly members, tomorrow’s event will be their first 5K,” she said.
The icing on the cake at the end of the evening was a generous delivery of of Gi-Gi's cupcakes.
