WESTFIELD, NJ — Aidan Windorf, a member of Boy Scout Troop 73 at Holy Trinity Church and a senior at Oratory Prep in Summit, outlined his plan to improve a green space in Westfield memorializing the town's late Fire Chief Dan Kelly during a recent town council conference meeting.
The project will help Windorf fulfill his requirements to become an Eagle Scout.
Windorf proposed creating a landscaped and blue stone paver area in a park at Handford Place and Edgewood Avenue near where Kelly lived. His plans include adding a bench and a plaque commemorating Chief Kelly’s years of service.
“He’s had a tremendous impact on the community,” Windorf said of Kelly, who died in 2015 at the age of 54. “Overall and also specifically in this area everyone remembers him very fondly and he’s just been of tremendous service.”
Windorf said he expects the project will be finished by the end of May.
The council agreed to approve the project.
“We get a lot of scout projects coming to us and they’re all great, but to me this is very special,” Councilman Frank Arena told him.
