WESTFIELD, NJ — Boy Scout Sam Outten proposed improving Brightwood Park for his Eagle Scout project during a recent town council conference meeting.

“There’s an open area where me and my dad used to go fishing, and we never really had a place to sit while we were there, so I was planning on putting in a bench there,” explained Outten, a sophomore at Westfield High School and member of Troop 73. (Outten is also the brother of Boy Scout Ben Outten, who is planning a project in another green space.)

Outten also said he plans to put install birdhouses and bat houses to help wildlife in the park.

“Bats are very important to the environment,” Mayor Andy Skibitsky noted as the council verbally agreed to allow the project.

Outten said he plans to fundraise by selling flowers and through a GoFundMe page.
