WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School boys cross country team was honored at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting.

The varsity team, which won the Group 4 North Sectional Championship, the Watchung Division Conference and the Union County Championship title, was there Tuesday to accept their recognition.

“If that weren’t impressive enough, you placed third in the Group 4 State Championship,” Board President Gretchan Ohlig said. “To top off the season, the talent you demonstrated at the New Jersey Meet of Champions earned you the distinction of being the fourth-fastest Westfield team to run the state course in the 38-year history of the state competition in Holmdel.

“Congratulations to this squad of seniors, juniors and sophomores and your coaches who worked together to accomplish these outstanding goals,” she continued. “You have contributed to extending Westfield’s undefeated dual meet streak to 95 straight, dating back to September 2004. Congratulations.”

“Thank you for the support of all of our athletic programs at the high school,” head coach Christopher Tafelski said. “I think if you speak to any of these guys or any of the other guys — we have 85 of them on the boys cross country team, again one of the biggest in the state — or if you speak to any of their families I think you would hear a lot about the impact that athletics make in the lives of kids.”

Tafelski said that the amount of preparation that the team goes through is tremendous, with about 60 miles of practice running for every mile spent actually racing.

“That largely goes unseen,” the coach said. “That’s a tribute to their commitment to one-another, their commitment to the program. And also thanks to all their families for all the sacrifices that they’ve made to make that possible for their sons and for all of us.”

He praised the graduating seniors, who he said have shown fantastic character and leadership.

The athletes will start preparations for the winter track season on Friday, Tafelski said.

April 18, 2018

Having chaired the town council’s finance committee in the recent past, I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing a municipal budget for a town as large and dynamic as Westfield. But as I have expressed publicly and also to the mayor and my council colleagues, I do not support the adoption of Westfield’s 2018 municipal budget. Although the budget contains much that I ...

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.

Fear of Rising Rates? Remember The Reason You Own Bonds

If the current interest environment has you concerned about your bond portfolio, remember why you are investing in bonds.  The role bonds, or fixed income, play in a portfolio is not solely based on performance.  Bonds are used to offer stability, particularly when stock market volatility is rising. Rate hikes can dampen bond performance, but keep perspective on how rising rates impact ...
