The Westfield Community Band, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Connors, will present their Fourth Annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 25 at 2:00pm.

A special feature for the afternoon includes "Porgy and Bess Medley" featuring music from the opera scored by George Gershwin. Originally conceived as an American folk opera, Porgy and bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and highlights popular favorites such as "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "I Got Plenty 'Nuttin'". The opera is admired for Gershwin's use of European orchestral techniques combined with American jazz and folk music themes.

The afternoon will also include the popular "Commando March" by Samuel Barber. Originally composed in 1943, this march was Samuel Barber's first work scored exclusively for band and has since become a staple in band repertoire.

Additional selections for the afternoon include "Mannin Veen" by Haydn Wood, "Music for a Festival" by Philip Sparke, "Selection from 'The Sound of Music'" by Richard Rodgers and "The Seafarers" by Michael McDermott.

The concert will be held at the Edison Intermediate School, 800 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, admission is free.

The band will next perform in their upcoming summer concert series starting June 24, July 1, 8 and 15 in Mindowaskin Park.
