WESTFIELD, NJ—In a town whose Victorian houses inspired the Addams Family mansion, is it any surprise that Westfield residents love to decorate in ways spooky, kooky and weird?

Take the Lanza and Leone families—neighbors on Belvidere—who came together to help decorate each-others’ homes. As Kate Leone served a cauldron of mystery brew, her brother Andrew and neighbors Sofia and Jack Lanza spread spider webs over the shrubs.

“Putting spider webs on your bushes makes your house look really haunted and people seem to like it,” said Kate Leone.

“It’s fun decorating houses and its cool to decorate because kids and families like it when they come over to our house to trick-or-treat,” added Jack Lanza.

Meanwhile, on Woods End Road, sister and brother Francesca and Mario Russo transformed their front lawn into a funky cemetery.

“Decorating is fun and you can scare people on Halloween,” said Francesca Russo, while her little brother said that he loves to “scare people so they freak out.”

Freak out? Maybe. Enjoy some spooky sights? Certainly. Now's the time to catch the neiborhood's latest look while you can--inflatable Santas are waiting just around the corner.

2018 Municipal Budget is on Collision Course with Principles of Financial Soundness & Stability

April 18, 2018

Having chaired the town council’s finance committee in the recent past, I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing a municipal budget for a town as large and dynamic as Westfield. But as I have expressed publicly and also to the mayor and my council colleagues, I do not support the adoption of Westfield’s 2018 municipal budget. Although the budget contains much that I ...

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
