WESTFIELD, NJ – The Westfield Farmer’s Market kicked off its 2018 season in a new location on Saturday morning.

The market moved from the South Avenue side of the Westfield train station to the North Avenue side to create more access to central downtown, according to market manager Chris Devine.

“There seems to be a nice vibe that we’ve been looking for,” Devine said. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to revitalize downtown and get people interested in everything that Westfield has to offer.”

The move to the north side was also designed to attract more vendors, according to Councilwoman Dawn Mackey, and so far it has grown from 13 last year to 20 as of Saturday. More are expect to join, she said.

The move was appealing to Frank Bruno, owner of Vine Ripe Markets, who decided to join the market for the first time this year.

“It’s something that we’ve wanted to do for the last couple of years,” Bruno said. “With the move to the north side this year, it’s good exposure and a great way to be in the center of town.”

Vine Ripe Market’s mozzarella-making demo and High Mountain Food’s pickles appeared to be crowd favorites as shoppers milled in and out of the market, enjoying the live music and stopping to chat with members of the Westfield Town Council, Downtown Westfield Corporation and Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce on the sunny morning.

“All of our farmers are Jersey Fresh farmers, so a lot of the fruits and vegetables haven’t even come up yet,” Devine said. “As we go through the season, vendors have a lot more product and, as a result, more people come to make sure they can pick up the various produce at different times of the year.”

The Westfield Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until October 27.
