WESTFIELD, NJ — Firefighters put out a car fire across the street from Edison Middle School on Rahway Avenue at about 9:20 a.m. Monday.
The car’s driver, 68-year-old Plainfied resident Jacob Adedigba. said the 1999 Audi A6 caught fire as he was driving it.
“I was hearing some nose in the car,” Adedigba said. “I was talking to the mechanic on the cell phone and then all of a sudden it was smoke and fire in the car.”
Firefighters and police were summoned to the scene, where the smoking car had stopped operating between the two entrances/exits to the horseshoe street of Doris Parkway. That section of Rahway Avenue was blocked off from traffic for close to an hour while the fire was put out and the car towed away.
Battalion Chief Tim Brennan said that car fires like this one are common this time of year.
“It was just the engine compartment,” Brennan added.
