WESTFIELD, NJ — Up-and-coming Austin, Texas-based band Sweet Spirit's quick burst onto the music scene has gained them popularity on both the local and national level. With 2007 Westfield High School graduate Jon Fichter on bass, the band creates a unique sound with an emphasis on soul, pop and country music.
Their most recent record was released in April with lead single, “The Power,” becoming a clear fan favorite.
Fichter played in the WHS orchestra and multiple bands around the area during his time in town. A majority of that period was with his high school band, The Bus.
“There was, and hopefully still is, a good network of bands and clubs in and around Westfield that helped us out as young musicians,” Fichter said. “We played at the Crossroads in Garwood a whole lot, Hamilton St. Café, too. We were lucky enough at the time to have a great record store on South Avenue called Sound Station. It served as a hangout for most of my friends and me; it informed a lot of my musical tastes.”
According to Fichter, Sweet Spirit most frequently plays in New York City, Philadelphia and Jersey City when on the East Coast.
“We haven’t been able to play any of my old haunts,” he said, “but it’s always nice to see old friends coming out to the shows.”
Making up the nine-piece band along with Fichter are Andrew Cashen, Sabrina Ellis, Joshua Merry, Jake Knight, Danny Lion, Cara Tillman, Leslie Matthews and Samuel Protitch Rives. Sweet Spirit is managed by Nine Mile Records, an Austin label.
Sweet Spirit will play the XPN Fest in Camden, NJ, Sunday. Shortly after, the band heads to Portland, Oregon, and continues their tour throughout the country.
