WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School Cross Country Sectional Champion William Loggia was recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday night.
“Tonight, we are pleased to recognize an outstanding athlete, William Loggia, as 2019 cross-country sectional champion,” said Board President Peggy Oster. “Will captured the title last October with a personal best time of 15 minutes 49 seconds, which is a Westfield High School record on that course.”
Loggia, who was a captain of the high school cross-country team, also won the Sectional Championship in 2018. He accepted an award from the board along with his coach Christopher Tafelski.
“Kids learn from other kids, and they learn that the work ethic and the culture of our team is not perpetuated by coaches, but it’s perpetuated by kids,” Tafelski said. “I’m sure Will can rattle off a list of kids who have taught him what it takes to be a champion.”
Tafelski said Will’s accomplishments on the team will inspire younger team members.
“I’m sure that we will be up here again, and they will be able to talk about guys like Will, who taught them to be champions as well,” he said.
This year, Loggia placed 2nd at the Cross-Country Meet, 8th in the Group Four Championship, and 23rd at the State Meet of Champions, Oster said. She said Loggia will attend Boston University’s College of Communication and will run track at the university.
Loggia was named Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week last November.
