WESTFIELD, NJ — As Westfield High School’s varsity football team gears up for the season, head coach Jim DeSarno reacted to the NJSIAA’s decision this week to move Piscatway back to into North Jersey 2, Group 5 after it won the Central Jersey, Group 5 championship last year.
“They are always one of the best public schools in the state who won a state championship last year, so we know they will be good,” DeSarno said.
Although the Blue Devils won the last two state championships and hold a current state-best 25-game winning streak, DeSarno is quite aware of the competition they’ll have to face if they are to get to another game at Met Life Stadium.
“We have the same real good teams year in and year out, like Bridgewater-Raritan, Elizabeth, Ridge and Union,” he said. “You never know how schools from Essex County (East Orange or Columbia) or Hudson (Bayonne) are going to be, so they can be a threat as well. It’s always a strong section and we prepare with that in mind.”
