WESTFIELD, NJ — Two Westfield High School girls relay teams broke school records during the recent Union County Relays.
On Thursday, senior co-captain Devyn Heinzerling (3:53.5, a personal record), Tani Horton (60.4, a personal record), Emma Jackler (2:20.0) and Mia Melao (5:18.6) broke the distance medley relay record with a time of 12:32.79.
“The previous record was set in 2008 at 12:33.9,” head coach Jennifer Buccino said.
Then, on Saturday, The WHS girls 4x1600 meter relay team of Sarah Hacker, Caroline Stockwell, Taylor Bechtloff and Brianna Hatch set a new school record when they finished first with a time of 21:55.98.
“The previous 4 x1600 relay was set in 2007 at 21:58.7,” Buccino said.
Hacker (5:18.5) and Hatch (5:29.3) both came in with personal records.
“Hacker had a huge day dropping her season best time at this distance by 14 seconds, putting the team well ahead of the rest of the field,” Buccino said. “Hatch also dropped her previous best by nearly four seconds.”
For Bechtloff (5:38.9), it was her first race since recovering from a calf injury.
“In both events, the girls went into their races knowing what the school record was and that the intent was to try to break it,” Buccino said. “Their coaches are most proud of the fact that both records were set with eight different girls.”
