WESTFIELD, NJ — As the Westfield High School varsity softball team readies for its 2014 season, coaches and players hope to emulate and possibly surpass last year’s success.

Last spring, the team finished the season strong with a 20-7 record. It won the Union County Tournament, but fell to North Hunterdon, 3-1, in the state sectional semifinals.

“Our goals for the season include defending our county championship title and also competing further into the state tournament,” said head coach Caitlin MacDonald.

Many of those on the team are returning members, including Lizzie Fox, Julia Criscuolo, Cali Chambliss, Elena Scarano, Shannon Schaefer, Rebecca Kaufman, Chrissy Ferraro, Bobbi Snyder and Sam Velez.

“Some of the newcomers this season are ninth-grader Danielle Rinaldi, 10th-grader Elena Elliott and 11th-graders Shelby Estevez and Stephanie Brown,” said MacDonald.

Expected standout players this season include short stop Cali Chambliss, second baseman Julia Crisculo and pitcher Elena Scarano, who received the Union County Softball Association’s Banyasz Brothers Memorial Award for Most Valuable Scholastic Softball Player in February.

The Westfield High School softball team has played three scrimmages so far, but will open up its regular season with an away game against Cranford on April 1.
