WESTFIELD, NJ — Seven Westfield High School students signed national letters of intent to continue their athletics at the collegiate level Wednesday.

Two of these students will play Division I athletics: Elizabeth Brucia will play soccer for the University of Georgia and Owen Kessler will play football for Georgetown University.

Westfield is also sending five students to Division III schools to continue in their respective sports. Two will play lacrosse: Samantha Alfano will play for Gettysburg College and Lila Hutchins will play for Bates College.

Shannon Devitt will play basketball at The College of New Jersey. Leigh Scarano will be playing volleyball at The University of Scranton. Christina Seery will play field hockey at Franklin & Marshall College.

“I'm excited to be part of a team at such an intense level and the talent I'll be seeing at the collegiate level,” Seery said. “I'm excited for the overall college athlete experience.”

“Our student athletes work really, really hard as students and as athletes,” WHS Athletic Director Sandra Mamary said. “It’s pretty evident by the schools they’re going to. Athletics and academics are definitely going hand and hand here.”

Mamary noted that this is the first year WHS is having a signing day for Division III students, and said she is very happy that the school can recognize their hard work.
