WESTFIELD, NJ – The Westfield High School Varsity Bowling Team was recognized at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

The team, led by coaches Ralph Corey and Al Rabinowitz, scored eight team scores of over 3,000 and have a 17-1 record as of the 2018-2019 Watchung Conference Champions, Board President Peggy Oster said.

At the conclusion of their season, the team earned a championship trophy last month at the North 2, Group 4 Sectional tournament in Linden, Oster said.

Team member Will Shepherd, who earned a varsity bowling letter as a freshman, won the 2019 Union County Conference Individual Bowling Tournament in the boys division, Oster said. Shepherd bowled a perfect game (300 score) on Dec. 8 in the Westfield Warren Wheeler Tournament, Oster added.

Oster presented a recognition award to each player, as well as both coaches.

“Congratulations, it’s a true honor to win a State Championship, and we’re very, very proud of you,” said Oster, after handing out the awards.

Corey thanked the team members for supporting each other.

“Coach [Al Rubinowitz] and I are extremely proud of all their success this season, and the growth they’ve achieved over these last five years, as athletes and young men,” he said.

The bowling team began five years ago, when Corey and Rabinowitz created a middle school program to generate interest in bowling, Corey noted.

“Thank you again for setting time aside at tonight’s board meeting to honor our athletes and our program,” he said.

The team consists of the following eight Westfield High School students.

  • Tyler Devitt
  • Jonathan Grossman
  • Dylan Kurstedt
  • Dante Morales
  • Austin Peterson
  • Trey Rabinowitz
  • Jared Saltzer
  • William Shepherd
