SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The Westfield High School Marching Blue Devils stormed onto the field Saturday night in their first competitive performance of 2014. Westfield performed their show entitled "Industry: Dark to Light" at neighboring Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in front of a familiar and passionate crowd.
The Marching Blue Devils took home first place in Group 4A with a score of 73.35, winning caption awards for best music, best visual and best overall effect. At one point, the band’s hats, called shakoes, lit up.
“I thought we were spectacular tonight,” said senior clarinet player Joey DeRosa. “The moment when we turned on our shako lights, the audience was blown away. The crowd's reaction was priceless."
Saturday night's performance was the band's second performance of the day. The Marching Blue Devils also took the field during halftime of the football game earlier in the day against Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, where Westfield secured a 26-6 victory over their local rival.
The Westfield High School Marching Band continues to work hard and looks forward to their next competition at Somerville High School on Oct. 11. The band will perform at approximately 7:15 p.m. For more information about that competition, click here.
