On Thursday, May 4 at 2 p.m., the Westfield Memorial Library will offer an Origami Workshop for Adults and at 7 p.m. the same day, the library will present Total Body Renew Yoga. The Yoga class will also be offered on May 11 and 18. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.
Origami, which will be taught by Joy Ann J. Cabanos, is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Participants will learn basic origami folds and how to make a simple floral bouquet--that would be perfect for Mothers Day--to take home. Materials will be provided. Due to the supplies and hands-on nature of this workshop, participants must register.
Cabanos is a mixed-media artist, poet and arts educator who teaches painting and origami in county and after-school programs, as well as in private workshops. Currently, her traditional Philipino “Parol” (Christmas Star) is on tour with the Somerset County's Touring Arts Exhibit, “Welcome Neighbor: Sharing Cultural Art Traditions.”
Total Body Renew Yoga will be taught by Lorraine M. Harwelik, a registered yoga teacher, certified herbalist, and licensed New Jersey educator.
“Are you stiff? Sore? Grumpy? Do your joints feel like they need a grease job? Did you know that you can upgrade your body's strength, flexibility, and agility?” said Harwelik. “This system of yoga movements is designed to help unlock your movement and comfort potential by safely warming and releasing muscle fibers and increasing your joints' range of motion.” Register here for May 4, May 11, and May 18.
The programs are free and open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders. (MURAL cardholders belong to the 43 libraries that are part of the Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries.
