WESTFIELD, NJ — SafeWise published its 2015 ranking of 50 safest cities in New Jersey Monday, and Westfield made its list once again, ranking number 42. Number one is Chatham Township.

In 2014, “The SafeWise Report” ranked Westfield number 36.

A home security provider, SafeWise said it used FBI statistics reported in 2013 and ranked New Jersey cities with at least 10,000 residents. Crime statistics were separated into two categories — violent crimes (murder, robbery, rape and assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson).

The article’s author, Alexia Chianis, praised Mayor Andy Skibitsky’s Safety Library, a collection of articles about safety available on the town website, www.westfieldnj.gov.

“It’s innovative thinking like this that helps the community maintain a low crime rate,” wrote Chianis. “Westfield reported a nominal 12 violent crimes, which is remarkable for a community of more than 30,000 residents.”
