WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School graduate Joe Greenspan was drafted by the Colorado Rapids in the second round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday. Greenspan was the 26th pick overall.

The central defender attends the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., which means he’s committed to serving five years of active duty post-graduation this spring.

“The league's worst defensive team over the last three months of the season decided to go big in an attempt to solve their center back problems,” wrote “Armchair Analyst” Matthew Doyle on MLSsoccer.com. “First round pick Axel Sjoberg stands 6-foot-7 while second rounder Joseph Greenspan is 6-foot-6. Sjoberg actually has a chance to start right away, while Greenspan's situation is in limbo because of his mandatory service after attending the US Naval Academy.”

If he can work it out with the Navy, Greenspan would have to make the team following a training camp at the end of January and beginning of February.
