WESTFIELD, NJ — Don’t be surprised if Westfield Police come knocking on your door, officials said during Tuesday night’s town council meetings. Detectives are following all leads when it comes to solving a recent rash of burglaries, and that means asking the residents a lot of questions, especially if there was a burglary on your block.

The uptick in burglaries in town began in December, Westfield police Chief David Wayman told the town council at its conference meeting Tuesday. The crimes are taking place during daytime hours and aren’t confined to one part of town, he said.

“It’s pretty much spread out though the entire town, primarily located on the western side of town, north and south side,” Wayman said.

Mayor Andy Skibitsky said that the town has been experiencing one or two burglaries each week.

Officials are asking the public to call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious, as thieves are often in and out of a home in a matter of two to three minutes.

“911 handles about 35,000 calls a year. They can handle a few more,” Skibitsky said.

“If anyone has any information at all … feel free to call our detective bureau directly or email police@wpdnj.org,” Wayman added. He told the council, “I’m confident that we will have a successful conclusion."

Wayman wrote an article with additional information and tips to help prevent burglaries. To read it, click here.

2018 Municipal Budget is on Collision Course with Principles of Financial Soundness & Stability

April 18, 2018

Having chaired the town council’s finance committee in the recent past, I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing a municipal budget for a town as large and dynamic as Westfield. But as I have expressed publicly and also to the mayor and my council colleagues, I do not support the adoption of Westfield’s 2018 municipal budget. Although the budget contains much that I ...

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
