WESTFIELD, NJ — It’s a bit of old-fashioned fun in the street with a social media twist.

Voting is open until 11:59 a.m. Tuesday in a town Recreation Department contest that had residents take to the street with some elaborate designs laid out in colored chalk over the weekend.

It’s the second time the Westfield Recreation Department has encouraged residents to take to the street with chalk drawings, following a weekend “Chalk the Walk” event in March. This time, however, the department encouraged residents to up their artistic games.

The suggestion to make a competition out of the event came from Councilman David Contract, said Heather Re-Ferratti, the assistant director of recreation.

“We said OK. Let’s just do it. Everyone likes chalk,” Re-Ferratti said.

To vote in the contest, indicate your favorite chalk choices with a like, love or care reaction on the Recreation Department’s Facebook page, organizers said. See below for the relevant post.

The contest winner will receive an electronic gift card valued at $25 to a business in Westfield, organizers said.
