To the Editor:
I am writing this letter because the Republican-sponsored healthcare bill is a disaster.
I am particularly concerned about the impact of this bill on our most vulnerable population: low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Under this bill, $880 billion dollars will be cut from the Medicaid program over 10 years through elimination of Medicaid expansion, passing along these costs to the states. This massive, unprecedented cost shift means that 14 million people will lose Medicaid coverage and millions of seniors, disabled individuals, the working poor and other vulnerable populations who rely on this program will be at risk.
This bill would end Medicaid’s guaranteed federal funding match and replace it with capped funding that will grow slower than state Medicaid costs. By 2026, federal Medicaid spending will be cut by 25 percent, and every state will be affected. In addition to its impact on people, cutting $880 billion federal funding to the states would result in employment losses, reduced business activity, and state and local tax losses.
The loss of federal Medicaid funding could mean a loss of health coverage for more than 500,000 New Jersey residents.
I hope that your readers will take action by calling Representative Leonard Lance at 202-225-5361 or 908-788-6900 or 908-518-7733 and telling him that they want him to vote NO to Trumpcare.
