WESTFIELD, NJ — There will be no formal Columbus Day program in Westfield this year, organizers of the annual event said.
The Westfield Italian American Club and Greater Westfield UNICO in a statement said the event’s organizers consulted with town officials and agreed to cancel the program in case there is a resurgence of COVID-19.
In June, Westfield health officials indicated they were preparing for a possible second spike in COVID-19 anticipated to come in the fall. Columbus Day is Oct. 12.
Westfield held its first formal celebration of Columbus Day in 2017.
Robert J. Tarte, co-chair of the Westfield Columbus Day program, anticipates a more significant celebration next year.
“The annual Columbus Day program will return in 2021 bigger and better,” Tarte said in the release. “We thank the committee and attendees for their hard work and support. We hope to see you all next year.”
