WESTFIELD, NJ – A high-end department store that earlier this year announced it would close 10 locations  will keep its store on North Avenue West, the mayor said.

Mayor Shelley Brindle told TAPinto.net that customers  "voted with their feet" by increasing their visits to the store. If the retailer had left, it would have been a significant hit to the downtown, she said.

"They bring a lot of people to our town, not just residents but people from all of the surrounding areas," Brindle said on Thursday. "That would have been a very significant challenge: filling it with something that would have delivered that sort of high presence to our community."

Westfield's Elm Street Reopens, But Will Traffic Nightmare End?

Brindle had announced the anticipated survival of the Lord & Taylor location earlier this week, following a round-table discussion with the retailer's new president, Vanessa LeFebvre.

“She shared with me that our Lord & Taylor plans to remain open and committed to Westfield, which I'm confident will please many of you who, like me, consider this retail destination so important to our community,” Brindle said.

The fate of the anchor store in Westfield appeared uncertain when the retailer said in June that it would close its flagship location in Manhattan, in addition to 10 stores.

LeFebvre dispelled that concern at the roundtable held with 15 customers, including Brindle, a report on MyCentralJersey.com said.

“We want to become even more intertwined and personalize each store to its community,” LeFebvre told the Courier News. “What I heard tonight was how important we are to our shoppers, and I was excited to hear that there are still opportunities to get their candid feedback.”
