Painted pallets will be sold at the Westfield Farmers Market Saturday.
WESTFIELD, NJ — The shipping pallets painted to bear the design of American flags, peace signs and other emblems have become ubiquitous around Westfield — and there’s more to come.
Joe Mindak and his family started painting and selling the pallets as a fundraiser for the Westfield United Fund’s “We Love Local” Campaign to support Westfield businesses impacted by the pandemic. Now that that coronavirus campaign for local businesses has wrapped, Mindak said, the family is shifting gears to raise money in support of the Westfield Rotary Club’s efforts to fight hunger.
The Rotary Club will be painting pallets at the Westfield Farmers Market, 8 a.m. — 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westfield Train Station Parking Lot, he said.
“We’re bringing the whole Rotary Club in to do this,” said Mindak, who is vice president of the Westfield Rotary. “So anyone who’s interested to come down and paint, feel free to volunteer.”
The goal, he said, is to paint and sell 100 pallets to add to the 325 pallets that have already been sold and can be seen around the town. The pallets are being sold for $50 apiece.
“It’d be great to sell all 100 of these tomorrow, to really get it out there,” Mindak said.
Funds raised in this effort support St. Joseph’s Social Service Center in Elizabeth, the food pantry at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield and Feed the Frontline Westfield, among other initiatives that fight hunger, he said.
Mindak said that for this recent effort Michael Colonna, from Avenel Pallet Co. in Warren, donated pallets and Sherwin-Williams in Westfield donated paint.
The effort, which started as a project with Mindak’s wife and children, grew significantly during the pandemic. In May, Gov. Phil Murphy gave the Mindak family a shout out for their efforts during his daily COVID-19 press briefing.
“We started about two months ago and in those two months we’ve sold about 325 pallets,” Mindak said. “You can see them all over town, so it’s done quite well.”
