WESTFIELD, NJ — Two Westfield High School students' effort to support an initiative benefiting local independent businesses impacted by coronavirus is so popular the games are spilling over into this week.

Tyler Mackey and Andrew Levy hosted the fundraiser for the Westfield United Fund's We Love Local Campaign in which players each donated $8 to play in six games of Fortnite in the span of two days. They made nearly $900 dollars in week one and will be hosting two sessions later this week to include everyone who has signed up.

Fortnite, an online video game where players battle to be the last one standing, has seen an increase in popularity among teenagers, due to stay at home orders.

“We did not expect more than 50 participants when we came up with the idea,” Mackey said. “When we reached 80 and realized we would have more than 100 people by Friday, we knew some of them would have to wait until next week. Quickly after releasing a wait list, it had already filled up, and we decided we would fill 200 spots for week two instead of 100.”

Registration for the second week was released on Sunday and saw 70 sign ups in five hours.

“The games were very intense and competitive, and lasted until the storm circle did not exist, which means the games were being played at the highest level,” Mackey said.

The players compete in teams of two, and there were six games in total for the first session, three on Friday and three on Saturday. There will be a total of 12 games for the second week.
