TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Westfield High School girls and boys varsity track and field teams both placed third overall in the team standings Friday night at the North II Group IV State Sectionals.

Junior Erica Lawrence was the sectional champion in the shot put — the first in her team’s history in this event. She tied her school record with 37’ 10.5”

Sarah Hacker placed fourth in the 3200 and set a new school record and personal best by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 11:29.48.

“Also earning medals and securing a spot to compete in next weekend’s Group IV State Championship meet are two freshmen,” coach Jennifer Buccino said. “Katie Hamilton, who placed third in the 800 in a personal best of 2:21.26, and Caroline Collins, who placed sixth in the 3200 in a personal best of 11:44.78.”

Other girls going on to compete next weekend are Lauren Triarsi, who placed third in the high jump and fifth in the 55H; Emma Jackler, who placed fourth in the 800 in a personal best time of 2:21.34; Julia Csorba, who placed fifth in the high jump; Leah Norton, who placed sixth in the pole vault; and the 4 x 400 relay team of Tani Horton, Grace Morgan, Hamilton and Jackler, which placed fifth with a season-best time of 4:13.11.

Meanwhile, the boys had a solid night, with 13 qualifiers for the Group IV State Championship, boys coach Christopher Tafelski said.

James McCutcheon and Matt Meusel placed third and fifth in the 1600; Spencer Weigand and Cooper Brennan placed second and fourth in the 800; Kevin Yucetepe and Will McGlynn placed 4th and 6th in the 3200; and 4x400 relay team of Steve Zucker, Weigand, Jackson O'Brien and Jake Saltzer placed fifth. 

“Our high jumpers had a great night, too,” Tafelski said.

Jack Cioffi placed third, while Finn Collins and Nick Rubinetti tied for sixth place. 

“Our third-place team finish was among our highest in the history of the indoor sectionals,” Tafelski said.
