Seventh graders Albert Chen and Emma Hoffman are this year’s Westfield intermediate school winners in the National Geographic Bee.  Albert attends Edison Intermediate School and Emma is a student at Roosevelt.  The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee.
The other winners in the Westfield competition include Edison Intermediate School eighth grader Jon Friedlander who placed second at the school and sixth grader Jonah Schieber, who was awarded third place.
At Roosevelt Intermediate School, eighth graders Rajan Olsen and Rowan Oberman placed second and third respectively.
Albert and Emma will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors.  All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the national competition this spring in Washingtion, D.C.
Andrea Brennan, Supervisor of Social Studies K-12 for the Westfield Public Schools, commented, “The mastery of knowledge demonstrated by our students in the Geography Bee was extensive.  “We wish Emma and Albert the best of luck in their efforts to advance to the state and national levels.”
