WESTFIELD, NJ — Several member of The Friends of Mindowaskin Park (FOMP) spent the morning of Saturday, Sept. 28, tying pink ribbons around the park in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The ribbons were supplied by Susan G. Komen North Jersey of Summit (SGKNJ). FOMP President Debby Burslem told The Alternative Press that she was speaking to a fellow Westfield resident who works for SGKNJ when the idea came up.

“She told me there was no one volunteering in Westfield to put them up, so I went to my board of directors about supporting this cause and then asked the town council for permission to do this on municipal property,” said Burslem. (Any use of Mindowaskin Park, from photography or filming to a wedding ceremony and even a park cleanup requires securing both the date and a permit issued from the Westfield Recreation Department.)

“Many of our board members are very active in other organizations and this seemed like a natural fit,” said Burslem. The Friends will remove the ribbons at the end of October when the campaign is over.

Burslem told TAP of a favorite quote from Fred Rogers that she uses when talking about her continued admiration for FOMP’s volunteer board of directors:  “We live in a world which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider these people to be my heroes.”
