WESTFIELD, NJ — Matt Goldman suffered a knee injury while playing lacrosse in his freshman year and so stepped away from competitive sports, but he’s still been a key player in athletics at Westfield High School.
Goldman, who is now a graduating senior, began his sports broadcasting career in his sophomore year, when he called girls basketball games with senior John Czarnecki.
“I took TV production in my freshman year, and it made me want to dive deeper into the broadcasting industry,” Goldman said. “My teacher also introduced me to Michael Leniart, who was the broadcaster for our school at the time, and he was a great mentor for me.”
After Leniart graduated in 2018, Goldman filled his role and became the high school’s main broadcaster. He has also worked with D1MediaPro, which broadcasts live events on the National Federation of State High School Associations, mainly working with the nationally ranked Roselle Catholic basketball team.
“Through this outside work I have met college coaches, top basketball players and current NBA players,” Goldman said. “It has been a truly incredible experience.”
Goldman’s favorite broadcasting memory is this year’s North 2 Group 4 boys basketball semi-final game against Newark East Side.
“Both teams’ fan bases packed the gym, which created an amazing atmosphere. The game was back and forth until clutch free throws from Griffin Rooney and Ryan Friedberg sealed the victory for the Blue Devils,” he said.
“I remember my partner Jake White and I standing and shouting through our headsets as the final buzzer went off, before the entire Westfield student section stormed the court.”
Goldman has also co-run the “Dubfield Athletics” social media pages for the past two years, which is Westfield’s school and sports spirit page.
He will be attending Ohio State University in the fall, with a journalism major, where he hopes to write for the student newspaper, The Lantern. He also plans to work for the student radio network.
Michael Siroty is a freshman at Westfield High School participating in a journalism program with TAPinto Westfield.
