Westfield’s excellent public schools consistently evaluate more initiatives and priorities than we are able to fund. Therefore, the community relies on the Board of Education, Superintendent, principals and teachers to focus on the most important of the community’s priorities.

Some priorities remain constant, like attracting and retaining great teachers and creating a strong curriculum. But in a rapidly changing world, we should consider redirecting resources when new realities expose areas that require a heightened focus. I believe there are four priorities that demand our collective focus.

First, I’m advocating to increase the frequency and diversity of communication between the community and the board/administration. An improved dialogue will ensure decision makers are better informed and that parents are more confident their voices are being heard.

Second, I’m advocating to dedicate more focus and resources towards security in the schools. Until the frequency and severity of school-related incidents subsides, we must aggressively research and deploy best practices to keep safety a top priority.

Third, I’m advocating for a deeper exploration of incorporating technology and innovation throughout the district. Innovation encompasses new thinking across a wide range of school related topics, from cutting edge curriculum to breakthrough programs providing better emotional support and guidance to our students.

Lastly, I’m advocating for the examination of thoughtful cost management without sacrificing district quality and standards. Every line item needs to be closely examined so that we can invest more in needed areas while managing the budget as carefully as possible.

Due to space constraints, this article is only meant as an overview, but I realize specifics are critical. I will be providing details on each priority over the next four weeks here in TAPinto Westfield. Additionally, you can read more about my positions right now on my campaign page @BauerForBoardOfEd on Facebook. Thank you for your consideration.
