One of the many things that attracted Maria and me to Westfield was the old-world charm of our Downtown. One morning while we were house hunting, we grabbed breakfast at Vicki’s Diner, and it just felt right. We always imagined that as our kids got older, they’d spend time downtown with their friends after school and during the summers.
Unfortunately, over the past few years there’s been a significant increase in empty store fronts. This is the result of several factors including affordability of NJ and an uptick in online shopping — to name a couple.
As a Councilman and Third Ward resident, I have always supported our local businesses. I get my haircut at Central Ave Barber, eat lunch at Five Star Deli, bring my kids to Buona Pizza and Tutti Baci Café, among many others. In most cases, I am on a first name basis with the owners of these establishments, and often check in to see how I can help.
In 2016, Westfield elected officials, residents, and merchants came together to form a Downtown Task Force. While I am pleased many of our initial recommendations have since been passed, including the allowance of rooftop dining and microbreweries, there is still a lot we can do!
Per state law, Westfield is required to refresh its Master Plan every 10 years. This past year, I worked collectively with the Mayor to lay the foundation for our updated plan. Thank you to the Westfield residents who contributed to this process over the years!
I will always work with Republicans, Democrats and Independents to do what is best for our community.
