Dear Editor,

We encourage the Westfield Board of Education to approve the new elective history course for the high school that studies the minority experience within the scope of American history. Examining historical and contemporary issues pertaining to racial and ethnic minorities through the perspective or viewpoint of those minorities is an excellent step towards the scholarly approach that will be expected of our students in their college history classes.

We fully endorse this proposed course — Power, Privilege and Imbalance in American Society — and applaud the forward-thinking approach of the Westfield High School Social Studies Department that worked to create it.
