AppleFest

The Westfield Historical Society’s AppleFest committee is pleased to invite our local community to the 11th annual AppleFest, on Saturday, Oct. 19from noon-4 p.m. on the grounds of the Reeve History & Cultural Resource Center at 314 Mountain Avenue in Westfield.

Join the Westfield Historical Society and over 350 friends and neighbors as we celebrate “The Westfield 300 Kick-off Year”!  The day’s events and activities will go back in time, to highlight the culture and history of our town in yester years up to today and to the future!

This annual fundraising event, hosted on the lawn of the Reeve House on Mountain Avenue, draws all ages. For AppleFest 2019, our celebrated Apple Café will feature an All-American BBQ with old and newer twists, presented by chef Greg Hichok.  We also present our traditional Apple Pie-baking contest and the Westfield-grown band “Save Mary,” who will play cover tunes from the last 40 years, while Westfield Ballroom dancers will swirl around.

Historic-themed displays, a school art contest along with more of last year’s popular Lightning Talks will round up the day’s activities.  Of course, there will be an assortment of old-fashioned kids’ games and several quizzes for young and older!

For Apple Pie baking contest rules, go to:  https://www.westfieldhistoricalsociety.org/events

With October 19th, also marking the beginning of Westfield’s AddamsFest and Unioin County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend, the Reeve House will display drawings and artifacts related to Charles Addams.

Thank you, as always, for your commitment to this town and its future. We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 19.

One thing that should be done immediately is to treat all levels of ...

On the Other Side of the Border

November 7, 2019

The children kept hugging us. They just wanted hugs. They wanted to be seen, to be loved, to feel safe. It’s odd — we teach our children to not talk to strangers, and yet when we entered the Shelter de Leona Vicario they ran to us, grabbed our hands and wanted to play. My Spanish is limited and their English was non-existent, but they kept telling us their names ...

FRANKLIN TWP., NJ — Years ago, tiny “hitchhikers” went unnoticed in a tank of live carp shipped from China to a fish farm here.
