Led by a cadre of compassionate ...

Letter: More Work to do on School Safety in Westfield

Thank you to everyone who supported me in my bid for school board. I’d like to Congratulate, Amy Root, Brendan Galligan, and Michael Beilen on their re-election. Though we may not have won, we certainly turned up the volume on the issue of school safety which is more complex an issue then it has ever been before.

One thing that should be done immediately is to treat all levels of ...

Om About Yoga

In the 2017 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) the number of American adults participating in yoga grew from 9.5% in 2012 to 14.3% in 2017. There’s Bikram, Hatha, Iyengar, and yes, even goat yoga. It can be overwhelming trying to decide if yoga is right for you. You may even question if it’s safe or you may have a health condition and are wondering if you can still ...

On the Other Side of the Border

November 7, 2019

The children kept hugging us. They just wanted hugs. They wanted to be seen, to be loved, to feel safe. It’s odd — we teach our children to not talk to strangers, and yet when we entered the Shelter de Leona Vicario they ran to us, grabbed our hands and wanted to play. My Spanish is limited and their English was non-existent, but they kept telling us their names ...

Is My Kid Under Too Much Academic Pressure?

We live in a culture driven by competition and perfectionism — where success is defined by status, performance, and appearance.

Both children and parents are exposed to these pressures daily and respond to such pressures, whether we are aware of it or not. The truth of the matter is that this is the nature of the competitive world we live in, and that may not be changing anytime ...

Under New Jersey law, services performed by an individual for compensation shall be considered an employee unless that individual meets the criteria of the ABC test. The ABC test begins with the presumption that a worker is an employee, thereby placing on the employer the burden of proving otherwise. In order to do so — i.e., in order to demonstrate that the worker is actually an ...

Property Taxes in New Jersey: Still an Ongoing Issue

Over half of Garden State property tax bills go toward educating the state's nearly 1.4 million public school students.

The average New Jersey tax bill is $8,767. About 52.6% of that, or $4,610, is the taxes the local school district levies on homeowners and property owners, according to data from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.

But the average taxpayers in some ...

Alternative Energy

Demand for energy is only expected to increase over time, and although energy stocks have long provided a stable return for investors, the sector is changing and will likely be going through transition for the foreseeable future.  Due to concerns about meeting steadily increasing demand, as well as the negative impact fossil fuel companies have on the environment, the renewable energy sector ...

'A Doll's House Part 2' Makes Timeless Claims at Summit Playhouse

SUMMIT, NJ – You wouldn’t think a follow-up to Henrik Ibsen’s play about Nora Helmer in 19th century Norway would be especially relevant today.

But the smart, funny sequel by Lucas Hnath has much to say about marriage, the cost of independence, abandoning one’s family and other issues that ring true. When Nora insists that marriage won’t exist in 20 or 30 years, ...

November 14, 2019

FRANKLIN TWP., NJ — Years ago, tiny “hitchhikers” went unnoticed in a tank of live carp shipped from China to a fish farm here.

The hitchhikers were the larvae of Chinese pond mussels (Sinanodonta woodiana). These highly invasive mussels have spread across Europe, but had not been documented in the U.S. until a discovery at the Huey farm on Joe Ent Road here in ...
