NEWARK, NJ — The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide that occurred in the Bloomfield Police Department overnight.

The preliminary investigation indicates that retired Newark Police Lt. Patrick Montella shot himself in the Bloomfield Headquarters while being processed. The 58-year-old was a resident of Bloomfield.
