Allen Chin

Allen Chin, 80, former Mayor and Councilman of Westfield, NJ passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife Mary and his family.

He was born in Duluth, MN, raised in New York, NY and resided in Westfield, NJ for over 50 years. Allen was a tireless and active member of the Westfield community. He served as Mayor of Westfield (1979-82), Councilman (1974-77) and as Chairman of the Westfield Town Republican Committee. 

He was named Unico's 1982 Man of the Year (Westfield chapter), Westfield Jaycees President (1971-72) and their Man of the Year (1967-68). He was instrumental in relaunching the Westfield Police Athletic League (PAL) in the mid 1970s and later served as a Board Member and President. He also coached Westfield youth soccer and baseball teams. Above all, he was a proud member of First Baptist Church of Westfield.

Mr. Chin received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio University, and an Associate Degree in Applied Science from New York Community College. He was a Professional Engineer in NY, NJ, DE and VA. He also attended the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Advanced Minority Business Executive Program at Dartmouth College.

He was President and Chairman of George G. Sharp, Inc., the country's oldest Naval Architectural and Marine Engineering organization, where he was employed for more than 58 years. He's won the U.S. Small Business Association's Entrepreneurial Success Award as well as their Small Business Person of the Year. 

Mr. Chin was among the longest continuous serving Commissioners of the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority (RVSA), where he served 5 times as Chairman and received an Outstanding Commissioner Award.

He was a Member of the Board of Trustees of UMDNJ (now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) and one of the original founders of The Town Bank of Westfield.

Allen will be dearly missed by Mary, his wife of 58 years, his daughter Karen, sons Ken (and his wife Ellie) and Mike (and his wife Cristina), and his granddaughters Amanda and Alyssa.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19 at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, NJ. The funeral will take place at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 20 at First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield, NJ, with interment to follow immediately afterwards at Fairview Cemetery, 1100 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ.
