On Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Florian Schantz will be playing with his Dixieland Band. The Dixieland jazz program is the most requested program that the Florian Schantz Band performs.
It’s a balance of live music and educational content, focusing on the music, the composers and the techniques and musicians from the early Jazz age. The band will play favorites such as That’s A-Plenty, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Ain’t She Sweet along with ballads and blues.
Horn player Florian Shantz started his own band at age 9, was playing in NY Jazz clubs by age 11 and hit his 300th gig at age 15. He and his band members are popular performers at the Sweet Sounds Downtown Music Festival held on summer nights in Westfield.
On Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. the duo Simple Gifts will perform. Simple Gifts is composed of two women who play plus twelve instruments between them.
Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, Linda Littleton and Karen Hershon play everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer frailachs and haunting Gypsy melodies. They spice the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style.
