The Great Submarine Contest of 1893 sponsored by the United States Navy, pitted New Jersey's Simon Lake against John Holland and others. Lake had conducted early and successful submarine experiments in the Shrewsbury River near his home in Atlantic Highlands (and at the confluence of the Shrewsbury and the Navesink Rivers) where he plotted a wheeled wooden submersible along the bottom of the river. This presentation reveals images and stories about Lake's failures and ultimate triumphs.
Geffken, a popular speaker on historical topics, talks about the men and their underwater machines. This presentation has images and stories about both men's failures and ultimate triumphs.
