WESTFIELD, NJ — With its annual Memorial Day parade canceled due to COVID-19, Westfield is getting creative with its celebration this year, asking residents to instead decorate their homes in patriotic ways.
This year is also the town’s 300th birthday, and a Memorial Day-themed Westfield 300 coloring sheet is available here. Residents are asked to place the colored sheets in their windows to help celebrate, tagging them on social media with #W300MemorialDay and sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Monday night, Mayor Shelley Brindle announced a musical surprise for Memorial Day weekend with a philanthropic component.
“We’ve also received the great news that local country music performer and Sweet Sounds of Downtown favorite Nikki Briar will play a porch concert at an undisclosed location for the Westfield community on Sunday at 4 p.m. via Facebook Live,” Brindle wrote in her COVID-19 update Monday.
Briar, the “hot, sassy, country rocker,” has been a popular performer during the town’s summer Sweet Sounds Downtown music festivals.
“Just as we kicked off the We Love Local Fund with a porch concert back in March, we will close it out the same way with this final push to raise funds for our local business community,” Brindle said.
Business owners who operate an independent business from a physical retail address in Westfield, who have been negatively impacted by the restrictions placed on commerce starting in March 2020, can visit the Westfield United Fund website, westfieldunitedfund.org, to apply for relief funding. Donations are accepted on the site, as well.
The application portal for the We Love Local Fund re-opened Monday for businesses who have not previously applied for funding, with a new deadline of May 26, according to the Westfield United Fund's website.
