WESTFIELD, NJ — You’d better shop in the downtown. Many elves are making sure it happens.

The Downtown Westfield Corporation announced the #WestfieldElfieSelfie Contest during which members of the public are encouraged to make a purchase at a downtown business with the “Shop Local Elf” window cling and take an “Elfie Selfie” — a photo with an Elf on a shelf — with their receipt in hand.

Tag both the business and #WestfieldElfieSelfie on Instagram or Facebook and shoppers will be entered to win a weekly prize, offered at random, Saturday, Nov. 30 – Dec. 29. A special prize will be given during the first week of the contest, consisting of tickets for the “Elf on the Shelf” live Christmas Musical.

The contest in Westfield comes with the support of the creator of the “Elf on the Shelf” animated film based on the book of the same name. Ken Waddell also happens to be a Westfield resident.

“It was tremendous fun creating the original ‘Elf on the Shelf’ holiday special,” said Waddell, executive producer, songwriter and writer of the animated feature. “So it’s amazing to see the town embrace one of its own as part of a way to fully celebrate the holiday season.”

He told TAPinto Westfield he’ll be sure to do his holiday shopping in town: “I wouldn’t consider spending my holiday dollars anywhere other than in Westfield,” Waddell said.

Councilwoman Dawn Mackey, who serves as the council’s liaison to the Board of the DWC, said a series of shops had placed elves on their shelves last year and when it came up during a promotions committee meeting this year, she made the connection with Waddell.

“I got very excited because one of the writers of the Elf on the Self movie, Ken Wadell, lives in town,” Mackey said. “I like it when our initiatives make sense for Westfield.”

Mackey said the DWC gave out elves to the first 30 stores that signed up, along with a window cling to indicate their participation.

“We are really trying to amp up our Shop Local initiative and remind people that everything they need is right here,” Mackey said.
