WESTFIELD, NJ —  Meaghan Murphy, Westfield’s chief spirit officer, announced the debut of her new TAPinto Westfield column at Tuesday’s town council meeting. Called “Meet the Neighbors,” the column profiles interesting people around town, who share their favorite things about Westfield.

Murphy invited the owners of three Westfield businesses up to speak, and each offered a special discount when you use the code word “Bestfield”: Glamorous Girlz salon is offering a free manicure with purchase of a haircut during July and August: AR Workshop is offering 15 percent off of any workshop during August; and Blende Custom Beauty is offering 10 percent off of the price of a custom blend during August.

Murphy is encouraging everyone to use the hashtag #Bestfield, join her Facebook page and follow Bestfield on Instagram.

“The Bestfield, NJ Facebook page is up to nearly 900 fans in as little as four weeks, which I’m pretty excited about,” Murphy said. “The thing I’m happiest about with this Facebook page is that it really is a positive place to celebrate the community.”

Bestfield pillows have been selling well at the Farmhouse Store, Murphy said, and DIY Bestfield shirts are also available at Westfield's Lord & Taylor.

Murphy is also organizing free rock-painting parties where people can paint spirit rocks to hide around town. More information about those will be available on the Bestfield Facebook page.

Murphy hosted the first meeting of the Westfield Spirit Squad Tuesday before the town council meeting began. Open to anyone, the Spirit Squad will meet to discuss ways to boost business and inspire community in town at 7 p.m. before each town council meeting. The next meeting is Aug. 8 in the municipal building.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.

Fear of Rising Rates? Remember The Reason You Own Bonds

If the current interest environment has you concerned about your bond portfolio, remember why you are investing in bonds.  The role bonds, or fixed income, play in a portfolio is not solely based on performance.  Bonds are used to offer stability, particularly when stock market volatility is rising.
