WESTFIELD, NJ — The Board of Education will consider an annual contract for graduate-level classes to teach teachers about prejudice reduction and holocaust studies. It is one among a slate of measures on the agenda.
The school board is set to meet at 8 a.m. Thursday at which time it is anticipated to approve the yearly agreement with Kean University’s Council for Global Education and Citizenship to teach Holocaust and Prejudice Reduction Courses to district teachers during the upcoming academic year, the agenda says.
Karen Stark, an adjunct professor at Kean University who is instrumental in the program, in a news release last year discussed the continuing education courses, which are a longtime staple of the district’s continuing education programming for teachers.
“These courses are intended to equip graduate students with information and teaching strategies to help them implement the state-mandated requirement for Holocaust/Genocide instruction for grades K-12 in New Jersey public schools,” Stark said at the time.
Also on Thursday, the school board is set to approve budget transfers to fund upgrades to the district’s security system in connection with a door replacement project, the agenda says.
The board is anticipated to fund approval for renovations to the TV studio at Westfield High School, the agenda says. School board members also have a slate of personnel items on the agenda.
The 8 a.m. school board session will mark the third such morning meeting the board has held since June. A school official, however, told TAPinto Westfield the morning routine is not anticipated to continue into the academic year.
“These special board meetings are held mainly to appoint key personnel; all are short meetings,” said School Business Administrator Dana Sullivan in an email. “During the summer months, it is easier to get a quorum of the board together for a morning meeting. We will resume our regular evening meeting schedule on Aug. 27.”
At its morning meeting in June, the school board approved the appointment of a new principal at Westfield High School. The board also decided on a $9,500 contract to fund a look at more secure doorway entries to district buildings.
At its morning meeting in July, the school board approved the appointment of a new principal at Roosevelt Intermediate School. The board also discussed remediating mold found under the flooring of an elementary school gym.
